Sometimes my boys really do surprise me. I’m not talking about big surprises like making me breakfast in bed for no reason I’m talking about the little surprises like when they try a new food that I’m sure they will hate or complain about but instead the gobble it up and ask for more. These little surprises have been popping up more and more lately the newest one happened on Saturday when I took B back to school shopping for his new backpack and lunch bag. I was SO sure (along with anyone that really knows B) we were going to come home with an Iron Man, Avengers or Batman back pack and for about 15 minutes it was looking like that was the direction he was going. As soon as he saw the black, red and orange backpack he picked it up and in his most excited and loud voice he claimed the Iron Man backpack as his and kept telling me how it was the coolest backpack there so we ventured in the direction of the lunch bags and that’s when it happened. I turned to ask him what kind of lunch bag he wanted and he wasn’t right at my heels. Naturally my mommy heart stopped for a couple beats until I looked down the row of backpacks we just walked by and he was standing there just staring. As I got closer to him I noticed that he was staring at a backpack that didn’t have a a superhero stuck on the front no cape, no mask to conceal the secret identity just a blue animal (a platypus to be exact). B’s newest cartoon obsession is Phineas and Ferb, not something I would have ever been into and it drives me insane (what is their older sisters issue she is such a brat) but he is LOVING it. As I got closer to him I asked him what he was looking at and as excited as Ive seen him since his birthday he grabbed the backpack and yelled ‘its Perry Platypus! I didn’t even know they made this backpack’ and then it came time to make the tough decision it took a total of 15 minutes (yes I timed him) to decide between the Iron Man backpack and the Perry backpack but Perry won out which changed the mood of the day. I was excited that he finally had something that wasn’t plastered with some sort of superhero and he was excited for school to show off his backpack which was the coolest backpack ever.
My second surprise that day came when it came time to pick out lunch bags. I told him he could pick out whatever lunch bag he wanted and it would hold his snacks and lunch for school so he had to make sure it had enough room for the food he wanted to take to school. Naturally the first one he saw and grabbed was a batman one and being his mom for the past 5 years (3 of which he has spent consumed with superheros) I saw and knew he was going to grab the batman one that even had a little cape on the back to up the cool factor. He inspected it and kept telling me it was really cool but it just didn’t have enough room for all the food he needed to take to school but he held onto it until he found the perfect one which was basically a reusable paper bag but much cuter. They had it in all sorts of colours and instead of getting the solid blue one (which I was positive would be the one he would choose since its his favorite colour) he picked one that had a bunch of coloured squares and he kept telling me it was ‘perfect’.
Usually the surprises I get from my boys are ones I have to clean and scrub but occasionally I get these little surprises that show me other sides of the little people I’m raising. Although B has spent the past 3 years completely immersed in superheros his interests are starting to branch out a little and he is realizing there is more outside ‘Superhero City’ and other things can be cool as well but as I sit here typing this and listening to him fight bad boys in his room I know that superheroes are still going to be around for a while and why not. They are cool, they have super powers and they always save the day and when your 5 that’s all that matters.
Its been a busy week here for us which has caused me to fall behind on my blogs so I will attempt to do my best to recap the week.
~ My dad came for a visit. I hadn’t seen him in 4 years since he lives all the way in Ontario and I live out here in Alberta. He came out for 4 days and spoiled B and O who had a blast having him here.
~I finally got a few of my old childhood pictures and after comparing them to pictures of the boys I have realized that my little guys didn’t get much from me in the looks department but boy do they get their attitude from me.
~S and I took the boys to the Westerner. We went on the first day and it was in the middle of the week so there wasn’t quite as much as there usually is on the weekend but it wasn’t too hot and it wasn’t too busy plus the boys had a blast and they had no clue that there weren’t as many animals to see or vendors trying to sell us useless crap and that’s all that matters.
~O got to go on his first ride (the Merry-Go-Round) and he was so excited and it made his week. I will never forget the look on his face!
~Friday I got to have a day out with my smallest man O. We went to the mall and shared french fries, I bought him a new Transformer toy and we went and got a special surprise for the boys (mostly B) that I will share in a later post.
Typing it all out doesn’t look like a lot but when you add in regular chores as well as catching up on the chores you let slack for a few days it all can get slightly overwhelming.
There ya go that’s what our week looked like and Im tired just thinking about it all again.

After my first failure I tweaked my goal a little to allow a little wiggle room to allow myself a little without going over board. I am proud to say I aced this goal. I allowed myself to have one on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Monday (then Wednesday and Friday since I missed my check in on Tuesday). I only had one green tea iced tea from Tim Horton’s on Saturday and I attempted to have a diet coke on Monday but I could barely get through 2 sips without being over whelmed by how sweet it was. I’m going to take my reaction to the diet coke as a good sign that I am not as ‘hooked’ on pop as much as I thought.
For the next week my goal is to keep the same one sugary drink every other day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday…) but before I buy, open and drink it my goal is to make sure the drink is worth the points/calories as well as why I want it. Nothing too deep but am I drinking it because its the only option and I’m thirsty, I’m tired of water blah blah blah.
I just want to do a super quick check in! Last Friday my dad showed up for a few day from Ontario (a 3ish day drive) after not seeing him for about 4 years. It was nice to catch up with him and introduce him to my littlest men.
We also managed to make it to the Westerner in Red Deer where B had SO much fun going on as many kids rides as he could and O even got to ride the Merry-Go-Round which he loved (Of Course).
Every day before, after and in between I worked as hard as I could to try and meal plan and get/keep this place as clean as possible which is a lot harder then you would think.
Oh well Im getting back into the groove of things and getting back on track with WW after slipping a bit the past week which I will write more about that next time! Until next time here are some
On our way to the Westerner
I swear he LOVED it!

This is how you can tell if your kids had a fun day!

B just turned 5 and I think its the perfect time to start giving him a little more responsibility. Sunday we officially started a chore chart for him. When we started it I couldnt help but think of how unoriginal it was but to be honest I dont care he has been doing great with it and its a good way to get some of the small things I usually do at night after the little guys are in bed which has freed up a little time for me. He doesnt and wont get an allowance for doing his chores but when hes a little older and understands money a little more I want to offer an allowance for doing extra chores. I think its important for children to learn that when your in a family you need to help out without expecting anything in return.
With B’s 5th birthday just over and getting ready for kindergarten in the fall its hard not to realize that he is getting bigger and older in the blink of an eye. O’s birthday was in April and 2 doesnt seem as big as 5 but watching him grow and hit all his milestones its clear that he is growing just as fast. I know that as parents we should be happy that they are growing and healthy but I cant help it some days I wish there was a pause button on life so I can enjoy these snuggles and smooches a little longer. Before I know it my boys are going to be embarrassed to have me around (not that it wont be well deserved ha ha ha I plan on being embarrassing). I cant wait for the day where I can sit here and type without O climbing all over me to put in his 2 cents but I know that when that day comes Im going to miss it and wish for a rewind button.

Its been busy here the past few days. Friday was my Big Boy B’s 5th birthday (I think I just aged a few more years just typing that) and boy did we keep busy. We went to the water park, went out for lunch and played in the yard the rest of the day before we went to their grandparents place for a family party. I ignored everything from my poor blog (that I just started lol) to Twitter to Facebook in the hopes of spending some good family time with my boys and I have to be honest, I’m glad I did.
B was so spoiled on his birthday he got to play with his best friend at the water park, he got McDonalds for lunch, had a hot dog roast at his grandparents, cake and lots of presents. Even O bear had a blast and made sure he said ‘Happy Birthday’ to everyone (I love 2 year olds)
Saturday and Sunday we caught up on family time, did groceries and had a nice relaxing weekend followed by a busy Monday of catching up on all the chores I let slip over the weekend and baking cookies with the boys. It was nice to finally spend some quality time doing very little but having lots of fun with my 3 guys. I think I’m going to try and do it more often even though catching up on everything I let slide is a major pain in the butt.

Its been a hectic weekend here and Ive had a few slip ups with my first goal which is a little embarrassing but I’m not giving up!
I did good most of the week. I’ve only had my morning coffee each day and plain water the rest of time. Friday was B’s 5th birthday and I held strong until lunch when I caved and had a snack size McDonald’s vanilla frappe which was beyond delicious and reminded my why I’m addicted to these things. I swore them off for the rest of the week but my will power wasn’t strong enough because the next day I did it again I had another snack size frappe. Although it was just as delicious as the one before it I promised myself that I wasn’t going to have another until the end of the week and I’m proud to say Ive stayed strong and haven’t had one since Saturday. Saturday night Ive also had a ‘Karma Water’ and another one on Sunday these claim to be healthy which was my justification as to why I had them but now sitting here and reflecting on it it was a poor excuse to cheat on my goal and no matter how good it tasted it didn’t make me feel any less guilty about cheating. Sitting here on my couch as I type this I am proud to say that I haven’t had a single sugary drink since Sunday and although it wasn’t that long ago I still should celebrate the small victories.
After thinking about the past week and my slip ups and small victories I needed to reexamine my goal. Maybe giving up all sugary drinks for the week was a little ambitious and not at all realistic for myself. When I started with weight watchers I slowly cut things out since giving things up cold turkey NEVER works for me and leads to some binges (such as the Friday, Saturday, Sunday episode). I have decided to alter my mini goal from zero sugary drinks to one every other day this week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Monday).
Ill post back next Tuesday about any success and any failures (hopefully only success this time).
